Hurricane Prep for Your Miami Yard: Clear It Before the Storm Does

    Published 2026-07-20

Loose yard junk becomes projectiles in hurricane wind. What to clear before a storm, how Miami-Dade debris pickup works after, and how to get help fast.

The yard junk you ignore all year is the problem

Peak hurricane season in South Florida runs mid-August through October, and the most dangerous things in a storm are not trees. They are the loose objects sitting in yards: patio chairs, grills, ladders, leftover lumber, fence panels leaning against the wall since last summer. At 100 mph, all of it flies. Insurance adjusters see the same pattern after every storm: broken windows and roof punctures caused by the homeowner's own stuff or a neighbor's. The cheapest hurricane prep you can do is simply having less loose material on your property when the cone shows up.

What to clear now, while the forecast is quiet

    • Old lumber, fence sections, and plywood scraps leaning anywhere outdoors.
    • Broken patio furniture, rusted grills, and anything you already know you are not keeping.
    • Yard waste piles: trimmed branches and palm fronds waiting for a someday pickup.
    • Construction leftovers from finished projects: tiles, pavers, buckets, scaffolding boards.
    • The dead appliance on the side of the house. Every Miami house has one.
    • Anything on a flat roof or balcony that is not bolted down.

Empty the garage, protect the car

A car parked inside a garage rides out a hurricane far better than one in the driveway, and comprehensive claims for wind damage are among the most common after a storm. If your garage is too full to fit the car, that is a solvable problem: a garage cleanout takes an afternoon, and it doubles as your storm prep. You get the parking spot back and eliminate a garage full of loose objects at the same time.

What happens after a storm: the county timeline

After a major hurricane, Miami-Dade runs special debris collection, but it takes time: after past storms, some neighborhoods waited weeks for the first pass. The county also requires debris sorted into separate piles at the curb (vegetative debris separate from construction material and appliances), and unsorted piles get skipped. Meanwhile the pile sits there through the next rainstorm, draws rats and mosquitoes, and your HOA starts sending letters. If you want your property back faster, a private haul clears everything in one visit, sorted and documented with receipts you can submit with an insurance claim.

    How we work storm season

Before a storm: pre-season cleanups of yards, garages, and loose debris, scheduled normally. When a storm is named and approaching, call early because the calendar fills within hours. After a storm: we start running as soon as roads are passable, usually within 24 to 48 hours, in the order calls come in. We are a Kendall-based family company that has worked every South Florida storm season since 1993, and we do not do storm-chaser pricing. Same rates, same crew, before and after.

    FAQ

When should I do hurricane prep cleanup?

Now, before a storm is named. Once a system enters the forecast cone, everyone calls at once: tree trimmers, shutter installers, and haulers all book out within a day or two. A cleanup done in July or early August costs the same and eliminates the panic.

Does homeowners insurance pay for debris removal?

Often yes, when the debris comes from a covered loss. Policies commonly include a debris removal provision. We provide itemized receipts for insurance claims; confirm your specific coverage with your insurer or adjuster.

What should I not put at the curb after a storm?

Do not mix construction debris, appliances, or electronics into a vegetative pile: the county requires separate piles and skips mixed ones. Never pile debris against poles, hydrants, meters, or under power lines, and keep storm drains clear.

How fast can you come after a hurricane?

We start as soon as roads are passable, typically within 24 to 48 hours, working the call list in order. Call (305) 986-0692 early, and text photos if service is spotty. We do not work during active storm conditions.
