Asphalt shingle is bulky but light: it fills a container fast without weighing much. Barrel tile, common on older homes across Kendall, Coral Gables, and much of the county's tile-roofed housing stock, is the opposite: it's dense, and a tile tear-off can hit a truck's legal weight limit before the container looks even half full. A single-layer asphalt shingle roof under about 2,000 square feet usually fits one 20-yard container. Tile, or any roof with a second layer of shingles underneath, usually needs a 30-yard, or a same-day swap once the first load comes down. Protect the driveway before two heavy trucks show up

A roof job puts two things on your driveway that can each mark it up on their own: a loaded roll-off truck and the roofer's dump trailer or material truck. Concrete pavers and stamped decorative driveways are the most common casualties. Ask for boards under the dumpster's rails when we deliver; it spreads the container's weight and keeps the steel from biting into pavers or cracking older concrete. Coordinate placement with your roofer too. The container and the roofer's staging area both need clear ground, and a driveway with two trucks trying to share it during tear-off is how ladders and material end up scraping across your car.

Where the dumpster sits during the tear-off

Keep the container close to the roof edge where debris is coming off, but out from directly under the work: falling shingle bundles and tile shards damage a container's lid track and, more importantly, can hit anyone standing near it. Most roofers stage a chute or just toss debris a short distance from the eave, so the dumpster usually sits along the side of the driveway nearest that section of roof, not centered under the ladder.
